Woven Arch Bridge: Histories of Constructional Thoughts (China Perspectives)

This book focuses on the woven arch bridge, an arch-shapedstructure that is one of the most extraordinary timber buildingtraditions of the world. The woven arch bridge exists widely indifferent cultures and its specific nature is conceptualized by theauthor as a kind of “universal uniqueness,” challenging widespreadviewpoints on its origin and genealogy.Taking this argument as its main thread, the book traces thehistories of different woven-arch-bridge-cultures and investigatesin particular the woven arch bridge in the mountains of Southeastof China from three angles, using both archaeological andanthropological methods. Resting upon these case studies, adefinition of typology and a new theory of structural evolution areestablished, while the book also draws comparisons between westernand eastern timber building cultures and offers new insights on thedifferences between East Asia and Europe. The book also provides a large number of examples andillustrations of the bridge, and will be of great value andinspiration for architects and scholars studying the history ofarchitecture, bridges, and construction, while also appealing togeneral readers interested in historical bridges and traditionalconstruction technology.
