Literature of the Stuart Successions is an anthology ofprimary material relating to the Stuart successions. The six Stuartsuccessions (1603, 1625, 1660, 1685, 1688-9, 1702) punctuate thisturbulent period of British history. In addition, there were twoaccessions to the role of Lord Protector (those of Oliver andRichard Cromwell). Each succession generated an outpouring ofpublications in a wide range of forms and genres, includingspeeches, diary-entries, news reports, letters and sermons. Aboveall, successions were marked in poems, by some of the greatestwriters of the age. By gathering together some of the very bestStuart succession writing, Literature of the Stuart Successionsoffers fresh perspectives upon the history and culture of theperiod. It includes fifty texts (or extracts), selected todemonstrate the breadth and significance of succession writing, aswell as introductory and explanatory material.
